Introduce Yourself With Confidence- Part II
First impressions are important. Introducing yourself with confidence in grammatically correct English goes a long way in making a good first impression. Let us look at a few examples of grammatical errors people make while they introduce themselves so that such errors may be avoided.
Common Errors That People Make While Introducing Themselves
My name is Tom Brown. I am 45 years old and married with a dentist.
Correction: I am married to a dentist.
Simply saying “I’m married” works too!
Married with dentist X
Married to a dentist
Married with Jane X
Married to Jane
Good morning, I am Joe. I am the caretaker of this gym. I have been working here since three years.
Correction: I have been working here for three years.
The word ‘since’ is used to show the point in time when something began, whereas the word ‘for’ is used to show a duration of time like ‘three years’ in the above sentence.
I have been working here since three years. X (three years is a duration of time and so ‘for’ has to be used)
I have been working here for three years.
I have been working here for January, 2015. X (January, 2015 is a specific point in time when the action began)
I have been working here since January, 2015. ( the word since is used in such cases)
I am John. I am looking for work, because everybody in my family are working.
Correction: I am John. I am looking for work, because everybody in my family is working.
Although the word everybody denotes many people, it is a single group and so the singular verb ‘is’ has to be used with this.
The words somebody, everybody, anybody, and nobody are all singular.
Everybody in my family are working. X
Everybody in my family is working.
Everybody in this room are looking smart. X
Everybody in this room is looking smart.
Nobody are working today. X
Nobody is working today.
Are anybody working today? X
Is anybody working today?
The above were a few examples of errors that people often make while they introduce themselves or while they are in regular conversation with people. Being aware of these errors can help us in avoiding them.
